After Windsurfer World Trophy played at our club in 2018, after more than 20 years, the International Class Windsurfer obtained from World Sailing the status necessary to re-obtain official recognition and organize in 2019 the class World Championship, held in Torbole from 24 to 28 July. An event that, in addition to recalling new and old champions who have made the history of windsurfing, reflects the unmistakable “Windsurfer Spirit” kept in its 50 years of history celebrated in 2018.
The history of windsurfing has definitely passed from the Circolo Surf Torbole, as well as from the waters of Garda Trentino: in the racing calendar of the circle can not therefore miss a regatta dedicated to the first monotype windsurfing par excellence, the Windsurfer, originally known as Ten Cate.
Two Italian Windsurfer Championships were held in Torbole in 1985 and 2015.
The former is still recurrent among the anecdotes of the racers of that time (many of whom are still active), who went to run with the winter wetsuit (in summer) along the ascent towards Nago to drop weight and pass into the “light” category.
But the Windsurfer Class was the protagonist even before in Torbole: in 1980 a European Championship was organized by the Surf section of the Circolo Vela Torbole, even before the current Circolo Surf Torbole was completely recognized by the FIV (Italian Sailing Federation). In 2018 the Windsurfer World Trophy saw the debut in racing of the new Windsurfer LT multi-brand in production, renewed in design and construction: a novelty that led to the rediscovery of the Windsurfer class all over the world, with the approach of new levers in addition to the “old” Olympic and world champions.
